Heading South to Ushuaia

As we cruise along the N1 Highway into a head wind that’s about to throw us both off the bike I have MC Hammer’s “You Can’t Touch This” playing on my Sena Bluetooth. We have 68Km of fuel left before we are stuck on the side of the road and I can sense the worry coming from David. The nearest fuel station is 60Km away, but we are cutting it pretty fine in getting there. Let’s hope the GPS has the correct coordinates… In hindsight we should have filled up when we had the chance even if the tank was still half full, but we thought there would be a fuel station somewhere on this highway… Lesson learnt!!

We make it to the fuel station with only 6Km left in the tank, both David and I sigh with relief. I didn’t really fancy thumbing a ride into town, filling up a jerry can or whatever I could find and then somehow finding my way back to David who is babysitting the bike… All part of the journey though, I guess…

Our plan is to head South, take Ruta 40, a road famous for its windy and baron nature weaving in and out of Argentina and Chile as we move down the Patagonia and then on to Ushuaia. Ruta 40 is Argentina’s longest highway, and one of the longest national highways in the whole world. Big call I know, but it’s true… The only permanently dirt and loose gravel section of this road runs for 72 km between Lago Cardiel and the tiny hamlet of Tres Lagos. It was a challenging section of road that felt like it was never going to end. Stopping on the occasion to talk to other motorcyclist ‘s going in the opposite direction, I wasn’t alone in feeling nervous about it all. From Ruta 40, we were able to access the National Parks located in the Andean Forest area and the beautiful Patagonian lakes located at the foot of the mountains in El Chaltén, El Calafate, and Esquel. Not to mention all the hikes we did while visiting these wonderful places and the sore muscles I endured afterwards…..

We are now only a day away from reaching Ushuaia and I can’t wait to get there. It seems like this moment has taken forever to happen. It’s the southernmost city in the world that you can drive or in our case ride to, where the sunsets around 11pm and its going to be cold and windy…  After we have finished discovering all Ushuaia has to offer we will take the Carretera Austral, a highway that runs from Puerto Montt in Chile to Villa O’Higgins through rural Patagonia and another road we must take. It’s all dirt, I believe with pot holes and some loose gravel in sections. So, another challenge I’m really looking forward to!! I tell you, I’m getting really good at all the challenges life has been throwing at me lately..???? But the views along this highway are supposed to be spectacular and something not to be missed, so very worth doing. I’ll keep you posted on that.
